Whether for wayfinding, site analysis or another reason there is something both educational and meditative about drawing an map yourself. When you are asked for directions and the person says take a left, then straight on, then take the second left after the Aldi, how much do you take in? Drawing, even in a rudimentary way, gives a far more lasting impression.
